City Swimmers Claim County Record
City of Canterbury swimmers rounded off four weekends of competition at the Kent Championships with a series of impressive team swims at the Black Lion Pool at Medway Park on Sunday.
The Canterbury club made the final six in 12 out of the 16 races contested, with the boys 4 x 50m freestyle team of Joe Voller, Ege Sever, Sam Woodard and Dan Seagrove-Castle taking gold in the Junior (U17) event, then – two races later – in the 15/16 year category. Second places in 4 x 50m races went to the girls 15/16 year freestyle and 13/14 year girls medley teams, and the boys 12 and under freestyle swimmers.
In earlier sessions, the outstanding performance came in the men’s 4x100m freestyle. Canterbury’s young team led from the start with Ben Watson (17) coming in with 54.26. Joe Voller (15) held off the opposition in 54.32, Jazz Malcolm (20) extended the margin to five metres on the third leg (53.39) and Dan Seagrove-Castle (16) swam 53.41 to bring the squad home in 3:35.38 – three seconds inside the Kent record and five seconds ahead of second place team Beckenham SC.
Seagrove-Castle was among Canterbury swimmers excelling in the individual events, with four wins in the freestyle events. A superb 100m won him the men’s open cup, Junior cup and 16 year age group with a national qualifying time of 53.34. In the 16 year age group he won the 50m in 25.26, the 200m in 1:58.63 and the 400m distance with a new Junior and Open club record of 4:04.62 (also a NQT).
